How Azubis/Apprentices can use Football to Network!

Football is a sport that so many people across various nations use to come together. Football is ot just about competing, but also about collaboration. We have seen what football does to an Azubi who is looking to better establish themselves outside of their place of work and how they engage within German society in general.

We watched a fellow South African, Azubi Rea, playing for a local soccer club in Ettenheim, just 3 kms from Europapark. Rea has been playing for the club since last year August. Apart from his passion for football and his outgoing personality, he been able to solidify himself in the team, but also leverage off of the opportunities that come with being part of a local German club and a member of German society.

After watching Rea play, we decided to think about many ways he could use this as a way to network.

1. Building friendships with locals

Joining a local football club helps an Azubi connect with Germans outside of work. Teammates often become friends, making it easier to improve language skills, understand German culture, and feel more integrated into the community.

2. Expanding professional connections

Many players in amateur football clubs work in different industries such as hospitality, engineering, logistics, healthcare, or business. Casual conversations before and after training can lead to internships, side jobs, or future career opportunities.

3. Improving German communication skills

Football environments encourage natural, everyday communication. An Azubi learns useful slang, teamwork vocabulary, and confidence in speaking German under pressure, which can also improve workplace communication.

4. Creating a positive personal reputation

Being active in a football club shows discipline, teamwork, punctuality, and commitment — qualities highly valued in Germany. Coaches and teammates may later recommend the Azubi for jobs, housing, or opportunities because of the trust built through the club.

5. Access to community events and social circles

Football clubs in Germany often organize barbecues, tournaments, festivals, and volunteer events. These gatherings allow an Azubi to meet people beyond the team itself, including local families, business owners, and community leaders, greatly expanding their social and professional network.

For an Azubi, joining a football club is far more than just playing a sport. It is a gateway into German society. Through teamwork, friendships, language practice, and community involvement, football creates opportunities that can shape both personal growth and future career success. Sometimes, the most valuable connections are not made in the classroom or workplace, but on the pitch.
