Understanding Democracy by visiting the European Parliament

One of the most fascinating discoveries we’ve made at X-Factored Youth while exploring Europe is the incredible story behind how the continent became what it is today. Considering the devastation caused by the First and Second World Wars, it would have been easy to believe that reconciliation between nations was impossible. Entire cities lay in ruins, millions of lives were lost, and relationships between countries had been deeply fractured.

Yet, from those difficult chapters emerged a shared vision for peace, cooperation, and prosperity. Influential leaders such as Robert Schuman, Louise Weiss, and Simone Veil, among many others, helped lay the foundations for a united Europe. Their vision ultimately led to the strengthening of the European Parliament, which is an institution that represents the interests of around 450 million people across the 27 member states of the European Union by shaping laws and policies that promote freedom, democracy, security, and opportunity.

During our visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, we had the unique opportunity to experience firsthand where many of these important decisions are debated and made. It was more than just a tour; it was a chance to witness the heart of European democracy and better understand the institutions that continue to shape the lives of millions of people every day.

Stepping into the European Parliament in Strasbourg is unlike visiting any other tourist attraction in Europe. There are no medieval castles, royal palaces, or ancient cathedrals waiting behind its doors. Instead, you are entering one of the most influential democratic institutions in the world; a place where the future of Europe is debated, negotiated, and shaped.

The experience begins with a smooth security check before visitors enter the bright, modern atrium. Almost immediately, you’re greeted by the Parliament’s striking architecture: towering glass facades, open spaces, and contemporary design that symbolise transparency and cooperation between the European Union’s member states.

One of the highlights of the visit is the interactive exhibition. Through multimedia displays, touchscreens, immersive videos, and personal stories, visitors are introduced to the history of European integration, the challenges the continent has overcome, and the role the European Parliament plays in representing more than 450 million citizens across 27 countries. Rather than simply reading information panels, you’re invited to explore how laws are proposed, debated, amended, and ultimately voted on.

As you continue your journey, you’ll encounter exhibits dedicated to some of Europe’s most influential figures, including Robert Schuman, Louise Weiss, and Simone Veil. Their contributions remind visitors that today’s European Union was built not only through political agreements but also through extraordinary leadership, courage, and a shared commitment to peace after decades of conflict.

The true highlight of the visit is stepping into the Hemicycle—the Parliament’s iconic debating chamber. This is where Members of the European Parliament gather during plenary sessions to discuss legislation, debate pressing issues affecting millions of Europeans, and cast votes that influence everything from climate policy and consumer protection to digital innovation and human rights. Sitting in the public gallery, it’s difficult not to appreciate the scale and significance of the decisions made within these walls.

To enhance the experience, every visitor receives a multilingual audio guide, allowing you to explore the Parliament at your own pace. Whether you’re a student, history enthusiast, or simply curious about how European democracy functions, the commentary transforms each exhibit into a compelling story rather than a history lesson.

Perhaps the best part of the experience is that admission is completely free. In a world where many major attractions come with hefty entrance fees, the European Parliament opens its doors to everyone, making civic education accessible to visitors from around the globe.

As we left the Parliament and looked back at the impressive building overlooking Strasbourg, we realised this visit was about far more than politics. It was a reminder that democracy is not something that simply exists—it is something that must be protected, nurtured, and continuously shaped by the people it serves. For anyone travelling through Alsace, a visit to the European Parliament is more than worth adding to your itinerary. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation of Europe’s past, a clearer understanding of its present, and a glimpse into the conversations shaping its future.

Our visit to the European Parliament was far more than another stop on our European journey. It was an experience that challenged us to think differently about leadership, cooperation, and the power of democracy. Walking through the halls where decisions are made for hundreds of millions of people reminded us that lasting peace and progress are not achieved overnight. They are built through dialogue, compromise, and a shared commitment to creating a better future.

At X-Factored Youth, we believe that travel is one of the greatest classrooms in the world. Every city has a story, every landmark teaches a lesson, and every experience has the potential to broaden our perspective. The European Parliament is a perfect example of this. Whether you’re a student, an apprentice (Azubi), a young professional, or simply someone with a passion for history and politics, this is a destination that will leave you informed, inspired, and hopeful about what people can achieve when they work together.

If your travels take you to Strasbourg, make time for the European Parliament. Best of all, entry is completely free, making it one of the most valuable educational experiences you can have without spending a cent. Take the tour, listen to the stories, stand in the Hemicycle, and witness firsthand where European democracy comes to life.

Who knows? The visit might just inspire you to become the next leader, policymaker, entrepreneur, or changemaker who helps shape the future of your own community.

From all of us at X-Factored Youth, we encourage you to explore boldly, remain curious, and never stop learning. The world has so much to teach—and sometimes, the most powerful lessons are found in places you never expected.
