Not every unforgettable place needs to be a huge city. Sometimes, the smaller cities are the ones that surprise you the most. During my visit to Ulm, I discovered a city where medieval history, unique architecture and modern German life come together beautifully.
Located along the River Danube, Ulm is a city that shows how Germany protects its past while continuing to move forward.
The Schiefes Haus: The Crooked House With a Big Character
One of Ulm’s most famous attractions is the Schiefes Haus (Crooked House), a building that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale.
Built in the 14th century, this historic half-timbered house is famous because it leans dramatically to one side. While it may look like it is about to fall, the building has been carefully preserved and strengthened to keep it standing.
Today, the Schiefes Haus is recognised as one of the most unusual buildings in the world and has become a symbol of Ulm’s creativity and history.
For young explorers, it is a reminder that being different can become your greatest strength. Sometimes the things that make you stand out are exactly what make you memorable.
Ulm Rathaus: Where History Meets Art
The Ulm Rathaus (Town Hall) is one of the city’s most impressive landmarks. Built in the 14th century, the building immediately catches your attention with its colourful paintings covering the exterior walls.
The artwork tells stories from history, science and important ideas from the past. The astronomical clock on the building is another highlight, showing the incredible knowledge and craftsmanship of people from centuries ago.
Standing in front of the Rathaus feels like stepping into a history book — except this time, the pages are painted onto a building.
Exploring Ulm: A City Full of Surprises
Ulm may not have the size of Munich or Berlin, but it proves that every city has a story waiting to be discovered.
From the unique Schiefes Haus to the artistic Rathaus, Ulm teaches us that innovation, creativity and history can exist together. It is a city where old streets inspire new ideas.
