At just 25 years old and a prod member of Lungelo Youth Development (LYD), Nhlakanipho Mlambo is making an inspiring mark in Germany. Currently doing his social year at Theatre Rampe, a renowned cultural space in Stuttgart, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Nhlakanipho has quickly established himself as a valued member of the team. In just two months, he’s already known for his dedication, energy, and leadership spirit.

But this journey began somewhere unexpected — at a five-day Freiwilligendienste Kultur und Bildung Seminar (Voluntary Services in Culture and Education Seminar). The event brought together 30 young people from diverse backgrounds: 28 were pursuing an Ausbildung (vocational training), while 2 were part of an international volunteer exchange.

During the seminar, participants not only learned and shared cultural experiences but also had a chance to shape their community. On the final day, a vote was held to elect a representative for their group. When the ballots were counted, Nhlakanipho — affectionately known as Nipho — emerged as the clear choice, winning 22 out of 30 votes. His peers recognized in him a natural leader: someone approachable, thoughtful, informative, caring and driven by purpose.

Soon after, Nipho was invited to take part in a state representative meeting, where leaders from different programs across Baden-Württemberg gathered. However, in a display of humility and self-awareness, he declined a nomination for a higher leadership role, citing time constraints and a desire to remain focused on his current commitments at Theatre Rampe. Instead, Nipho was appointed to advise the newly selected leaders, offering his insight and guidance to support 14 group leaders from various cultural projects.

Nhlakanipho’s story reflects more than just individual achievement — it highlights the spirit of collaboration, service, and growth that defines volunteer work in the arts. His journey from seminar participant to community advisor is a testament to how passion and integrity can open doors and inspire others, even in new cultural settings.

As Nipho continues his social year in Stuttgart, his impact is already being felt — not only in the creative halls of Theatre Rampe but also across the network of young leaders shaping the future of cultural exchange in Germany.
